Makerere University’s 84th guild president, Papa Were Salim, has successfully graduated after a decade of studies. He is among the 212 students who recently graduated from the College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources, and Biosecurity (COVAB).
Papa, who served as guild president during the 2017/2018 academic year, pursued a bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Medicine, a five-year course. Residing in Nsibirwa Hall, also known as Northcote Hall, he began his university journey in 2013 and was initially expected to graduate in 2019.
Facing challenges with missing marks at the university, Papa engaged in business ventures while awaiting graduation, particularly in money remittance within and outside the country.
As a government-sponsored student for the initial five years of his course, Papa managed his tuition in the subsequent years. Reflecting on his journey, he expressed gratitude for the support from his lecturers and emphasized the importance of persistence and hope.
When questioned about his feelings regarding other students’ graduations during his absence, Papa acknowledged the initial sadness but highlighted the resilience required to overcome such setbacks.
According to Makerere University Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe, the institution’s policy allows for an extension of the course duration within certain limits. Papa Were adhered to this policy, ensuring he completed his studies within the stipulated timeframe.
Papa gained prominence for leading his guild council in rejecting a proposed tuition fee hike of 45% to 91%, which was intended to affect students joining the university in the 2018/2019 academic year. The subsequent demonstrations prompted the Council to abandon the implementation of the policy.
Reflecting on his graduation day, Papa congratulated all graduates, emphasizing the enduring sense of accomplishment associated with passing through the gates of Makerere University. The week-long graduation ceremony, which began on Monday, concludes tomorrow.
