Sexual Minorities Uganda (SMUG), a prominent LGBTQ rights organization, has pledged to challenge a recent Court of Appeal ruling that upheld the government’s decision to deny them legal recognition. The ruling was a significant blow to the group, which had been fighting to register as a non-governmental organization (NGO) advocating for the rights of LGBTQ individuals in Uganda.

The court’s decision to reject SMUG’s appeal was based on procedural grounds, emphasizing that the organization had not followed the proper legal procedures in its application for registration. This setback marks a continuation of the challenges faced by LGBTQ groups in Uganda, where stringent laws and societal attitudes create a hostile environment for the community.

SMUG has expressed disappointment with the ruling, stating that it represents another attempt to suppress the rights and freedoms of LGBTQ individuals in the country. The organization remains determined to continue its advocacy and legal battle, arguing that its work is vital for protecting the rights of marginalized groups in Uganda.

In response to the ruling, SMUG has vowed to appeal to a higher court, hoping to overturn the decision and gain legal recognition for its operations. The group believes that obtaining legal status will enhance its ability to provide support and advocacy for LGBTQ individuals facing persecution and discrimination.

The court ruling against SMUG underscores the difficulties faced by LGBTQ organizations in Uganda, where anti-LGBTQ laws and societal norms often stifle efforts to promote equality and human rights. Despite these challenges, SMUG remains committed to its mission and is preparing to continue the fight for legal recognition and equal rights in the country’s courts.
