Kampala, Uganda – May 3, 2025

Uganda’s political turmoil has intensified following alarming threats issued by Lt. Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the controversial abduction of Bobi Wine’s bodyguard Eddy Mutwe, and a violent police raid on the National Unity Platform (NUP) headquarters. These incidents point to an escalating campaign of repression as the country edges closer to the 2026 general elections.

Muhoozi’s Menacing Warning: “Face Lethal Consequences”

In a tweet viewed over 137,000 times, Lt. Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba (@MKainerugaba) taunted opposition supporters with disturbing details about the treatment of an arrested figure, widely believed to be Eddy Mutwe:

> “The beards were the first thing the boys removed. After he finished crying and urinating…”

Earlier, Muhoozi had threatened NUP supporters, boasting about arresting their “Commander like an Nsenene [grasshopper]” and warning of “lethal consequences” if they did not disband.

Human rights experts warn that such inflammatory rhetoric signals a deliberate and systematic effort to silence dissent in the lead-up to the elections.

Eddy Mutwe’s Abduction: State-Sponsored Disappearances Exposed?

Eddy Mutwe, a long-serving bodyguard of opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine), was abducted last week by plainclothes gunmen. Initially, Ugandan security agencies denied any knowledge of his whereabouts. However, Muhoozi’s subsequent tweets—featuring photos of a detained man believed to be Mutwe—have fueled accusations of direct state involvement.

Key Concerns:

Contradictions in Official Accounts: Security spokespersons claimed ignorance, yet Muhoozi’s posts strongly imply Mutwe is in state custody.

History of Abductions: Since 2020, over 50 opposition supporters have been forcibly disappeared, many of whom were later found tortured or dead.

International Outcry: The United Nations and Amnesty International have called for Mutwe’s immediate release and an investigation into enforced disappearances.

Police Raid NUP Headquarters Following Muhoozi’s Posts

Just hours after Muhoozi’s tweets, heavily armed police stormed the NUP headquarters in Kamwokya, Kampala. Officers reportedly assaulted staff, confiscated property, and tore down posters of Bobi Wine and Eddy Mutwe.

While the government claims the raid was a “preemptive action against illegal activities,” NUP officials maintain it was direct retaliation for revealing Mutwe’s abduction.

Human Rights Advocates Speak Out

Nicholas Opiyo, award-winning human rights lawyer:

> “Muhoozi’s statements are not just reckless—they are admissions of guilt. The judiciary must intervene to halt these extrajudicial actions, or Uganda’s rule of law will fully collapse.”

Sarah Birete, Executive Director, Centre for Constitutional Governance (Kampala):

> “When a general openly threatens civilians, it’s terrorism. The international community must impose targeted sanctions on perpetrators.”

Ugandans Speak Out

@Tumukunde (Kampala): “Muhoozi thinks he’s untouchable. But history shows dictators always fall.”

@DiasporaTruth (London): “The diaspora is documenting every crime. These thugs will face ICC trials.”

@NUP_Supporter (Toronto): “They raided our HQ because we exposed the truth. We won’t be silenced.”

What This Means for Museveni’s Regime

1. Muhoozi’s Power Play: His threats and public displays of impunity suggest a growing role as Museveni’s intended successor with unchecked security powers.

2. Pre-Election Repression: The raid on NUP signals a broader crackdown aimed at neutralizing opposition voices ahead of 2026.

3. Global Pressure Mounts: The United States, European Union, and other international actors face calls to freeze assets and impose sanctions on Ugandan officials implicated in rights violations.
