Kampala City Traders Association (KACITA) has continued to champion its call for the government to reevaluate and lower the installation fees associated with digital number plates for new vehicle owners. The persistent plea from KACITA stems from the desire to make this vital vehicular upgrade more accessible to the public. The appeal has once again come to the forefront as KACITA’s chairperson, Thaddeus Musoke Nagenda, emphasizes the urgency of addressing this issue.

KACITA has not been silent on the matter, as their dedicated efforts have resulted in some noteworthy progress. Specifically, Nagenda points out that the Ugandan Parliament has acknowledged and responded to two of their core demands, as presented in their previous petition. This highlights the effectiveness of KACITA’s advocacy in raising critical issues and fostering dialogue on matters of public concern.

However, while KACITA’s call for reduced installation fees gains traction, some lawmakers have voiced their reservations regarding the digital number plate project. They argue that the system, in its current state, does not adequately address the evident security concerns. Their primary concern revolves around the system’s lack of essential features, such as integrated cameras, which are crucial for comprehensive security and monitoring.

The ongoing debate regarding the digital number plate project’s effectiveness underscores the importance of striking a balance between practicality, cost-effectiveness, and security. While the project represents a significant step forward in modernizing the vehicle registration process and enhancing security measures, addressing these concerns is paramount.

It is worth noting that the government officially launched the digital number plate project on a recent Wednesday through the joint efforts of the Ministry of Works and Security. The project’s inauguration marks a significant milestone in Uganda’s pursuit of cutting-edge technology and security enhancements in the transportation sector.

As the discussions continue, the critical issue at hand is to find a harmonious solution that not only facilitates affordable access to digital number plates but also ensures that the security features meet the necessary standards. This way, Uganda can stride confidently into a future where vehicles are not only properly registered but also underpinned by robust security measures to safeguard the interests of its citizens. The fruitful collaboration between KACITA, government bodies, and lawmakers will be instrumental in shaping the future of the digital number plate project for the betterment of all Ugandans.
