The National Unity Platform (NUP) Canada Chapter has taken a decisive stand against the alarming human rights violations and erosion of democratic governance in Uganda. In a strongly-worded letter addressed to the Premier of Alberta, concerned Ugandans, human rights advocates, and members of the international community are calling for urgent action to address these grave issues.

The letter, signed by Charles Kyabaggu, Chairperson of the NUP Canada Chapter (Western Canada), highlights the disturbing trend towards authoritarianism in Uganda. It outlines the suppression of political opposition, election violence, curtailment of freedom of expression, and widespread human rights abuses. The letter emphasizes that Alberta is home to a significant Ugandan migrant community, many of whom are political refugees fleeing persecution, making the issue deeply personal and pressing.

Key Excerpts

  1. Erosion of Democratic Governance: The letter underscores Article 1 of Uganda’s Constitution, which asserts that all power belongs to the people and that the government derives its authority from the people’s will and consent. The current situation in Uganda, however, starkly contradicts this principle.
  2. Human Rights Violations: The ongoing human rights abuses, including arbitrary arrests, extrajudicial killings, torture, and suppression of free speech, have reached alarming levels. Reports from the United States Department of State and Human Rights Watch provide detailed accounts of these violations, further highlighting the urgent need for international intervention.
  3. Immediate Demands:
    • Release of Political Prisoners: Immediate and unconditional release of individuals detained for their political beliefs or activities.
    • Restoration of Freedom of Expression: Lifting of restrictions on the media, ensuring the safety of journalists, and guaranteeing the right to free speech.
    • Accountability for Human Rights Abuses: Conducting independent and transparent investigations into reports of human rights abuses and holding those responsible accountable.
    • Repeal of Discriminatory Legislation: Immediate repeal of laws that perpetuate discrimination against minority individuals.
    • Protection of Democratic Processes: Commitment to upholding democratic principles, free and fair elections, and respect for the rule of law.
    • End Military Trials: Halting the practice of trying civilians in military courts and ensuring fair trials and legal representation.
