Offset Credits Tyler, The Creator for Inspiring His Michael Jackson-Esque Image

Offset attributes his current Michael Jackson-inspired image to Tyler, The Creator, revealing the influence in a comprehensive interview with GQ. The Migos rapper delved into the evolution of his style, which now includes white gloves and sequined coats.

Describing the adopted costume as part of a character, Offset explained, “This character, it’s bold, a little selfish, a little arrogant, very confident, talking shit, and fearless to creativity.”

The “Bad and Boujee” hitmaker credited Tyler, The Creator with giving him the confidence to embrace his inner MJ. Reflecting on a conversation a year ago at the Roc Nation Brunch, Offset shared, “I was glorifying him, telling him, ‘I respect how you stay in character [for each album].’ He was like, ‘You should do it, too. N-ggas ain’t going to fuck with it at first, but n-ggas never fuck with the good shit first. They always sleep on it, and then you show them throughout the process.’ I really took that shit to heart.”

Offset also discussed drawing inspiration from a letter Michael Jackson wrote to himself in the 1970s, where he outlined career milestones that he ultimately achieved. Although Offset didn’t write a letter himself, he emphasized his commitment to showcasing his versatility beyond being a rap star, engaging in various creative aspects such as directing his videos, designing merchandise, and incorporating choreography and dancers into his performances.

Offset released his latest album, “Set It Off,” in October, a project that was initially delayed due to the tragic death of fellow Migos member TakeOff. The album’s cover art pays homage to Michael Jackson, featuring Offset in a black and white suit adorned with a bedazzled glove. Additionally, in the video for “FAN,” Offset recreates scenes from Jackson’s iconic “Thriller,” showcasing his dedication to artistic expression and differentiation in the music industry.
