US Passport Gender Marker Controversy Sparks Outrage Among Trans Community

The recent revelation by trans social media influencer Zaya Perysian regarding the denial of her correct gender marker on her renewed US passport is both alarming and deeply troubling. This decision, allegedly due to an executive order under President Trump, reflects a regressive step in human rights and personal identity recognition.

Despite undergoing full medical transition and updating all legal documents to reflect her gender identity, Perysian was forced to carry a passport that misidentifies her as male—putting her at risk while traveling internationally. This blatant disregard for personal identity and safety is not just an attack on one individual but a broader signal that the rights of transgender people in America are under siege.

History has shown that erasure is the first step toward oppression. The removal of the “T” from the U.S. State Department’s official website underlines a dangerous narrative: one that denies the existence of an already marginalized group. The LGBTQ+ community and its allies must remain vigilant in fighting against policies that dehumanize and endanger trans individuals.

The African Centre for Refugees in Ontario, Canada, along with international human rights organizations, must amplify these voices and advocate for policies that ensure equal recognition and safety for trans people globally.

We must ask: If a government can dictate someone’s identity on legal documents, what stops them from dictating their existence entirely?
