Viola Desmond : African Descent Ontario Celebrate Black History Month

In 1946, a courageous Black woman in Canada made history by standing up against racial segregation—Viola Desmond. Often referred to as the Rosa Parks of the North, Desmond refused to leave a “whites-only” section in a movie theater in Nova Scotia. Her arrest and subsequent fight for justice ignited discussions on racial discrimination in Canada, laying the groundwork for future civil rights movements.
Decades later, her impact remains undeniable. In recognition of her bravery, Viola Desmond became the first Canadian woman to be featured on the $10 bill, a symbol of resilience, defiance, and change. Her story reminds us that even a single act of courage can transform history.
