Ava DuVernay recently shared her joy over Angela Bassett’s well-deserved recognition at the Governors Awards. However, DuVernay took the opportunity to emphasize that this honor is distinct from the highly prestigious Academy Awards, slated to occur in two months. While winning an Oscar at the Governors Awards is undoubtedly a significant achievement, receiving an Academy Award at the main event is often considered the pinnacle of every actor’s career.

During an interview with TMZ in New York City, DuVernay made a clear distinction between the Governors Awards and the upcoming Academy Awards. She suggested that celebrating Bassett’s long-awaited Oscar win is certainly in order, emphasizing that she has been snubbed in the past and truly deserves an actual Academy Award.

DuVernay’s admiration for Bassett’s talent was evident as she spoke about watching her perform on stage and being inspired by her acceptance speech. Like many others, DuVernay believes that Bassett is long overdue for an acting Oscar and hopes she receives one at the upcoming Academy Awards.

On the other hand, Angela Bassett expressed her excitement at being honored at the Governors Awards. She encouraged fellow Black actresses to reflect on the intentions of their ancestors and to remain courageous. Bassett paid tribute to the empowered women she has portrayed in her roles, including real-life figures like Tina Turner, Rosa Parks, Coretta Scott King, and the fictional Queen Ramonda from “Wakanda.”

While the recognition of Angela Bassett at the Governors Awards is a cause for celebration, it is essential to acknowledge the distinction between this honor and the coveted Academy Award.

In her acceptance speech, Bassett stated, “This honor isn’t just for or about me. What I hope this moment means is that we are taking the necessary steps toward a future in which it is the norm, not the exception, to see and embrace one another’s full humanity, stories, and perspectives. This must be our goal, and to always remember that there is room for us all. When we stand together, we win together.”

Both DuVernay and Bassett have left an indelible mark on the entertainment industry, and their words and achievements continue to inspire aspiring actors and filmmakers alike.
