In an enduring tribute to the late rap icon Tupac Shakur, a segment of MacArthur Boulevard in Oakland, California, has been renamed “Tupac Shakur Way.” This posthumous honor was unveiled on Friday, November 3, in a ceremony attended by Shakur’s family, close friends from the Hip Hop community, and city officials.

The renamed stretch of MacArthur Boulevard holds significance as it is close to where Tupac once resided. The unveiling ceremony witnessed emotional speeches, with Shakur’s sister, Sekyiwa “Set” Shakur, expressing, “Let his spirit live on the rest of these years in these streets and in your hearts.” MC Hammer, a confidant of Tupac during his impactful life, hailed him as “hands down, the greatest rapper ever.”

The initiative to rename this portion of the street to honor Tupac was led by City Councilwoman Carroll Fife, who emphasized, “He claimed Oakland. He said Oakland gave him his game.”

The decision to rename the street segment was part of the city council’s agenda to honor Tupac’s enduring legacy in music and social activism. Fife, along with efforts from LeRoy McCarthy of HeteroDoxX Inc., orchestrated the street renaming, aligning with the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation to ensure the preservation of Shakur’s legacy.

Tupac’s affiliation with Oakland was pivotal in his career’s formative years. Despite being born on the East Coast, he commenced his journey in Oakland, working as a roadie and dancer for Digital Underground. The city was also where he produced several of his iconic albums, contributing significantly to the shaping of his musical legacy.

His work has been inspired by the ethos his grandmother instilled in him—to cherish what holds value.

McCarthy’s dedication extends to upcoming projects, aiming to honor the legacies of other influential artists in the Hip Hop community, fostering empowerment and recognition for their contributions. His tireless efforts underscore a commitment to ensuring the cultural heritage of Hip Hop endures for generations to come.
