Tensions have escalated between the National Unity Platform (NUP) Diaspora and Nrm Bloggers following recent allegations concerning the manipulation of Canada’s refugee system. A letter from a concerned citizen addressed to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has accused the NUP Canada Chapter of undermining the integrity of Canada’s asylum procedures, which has been met with a strong rebuttal from Dr. Daniel Kawuma, NUP Diaspora Team Leader

The concerned citizen’s letter alleges that the NUP Canada Chapter has been exploiting the refugee claim process for political purposes. It claims that several Ugandans, purportedly persecuted back home due to their affiliation with  National Unity Platform  and its leader Bobi Wine, have sought asylum in Canada. The letter highlights that some of these individuals have returned to Uganda post-asylum grant, thereby questioning the authenticity of their persecution claims. Furthermore, the letter describes coercive tactics within the NUP Chapter, where members are pressured into financial contributions to the party using social assistance funds, under threat of jeopardizing their refugee status.

In response, Dr. Kawuma issued a statement on behalf of the NUP Diaspora, describing a malicious campaign by proxies of President Museveni’s National Resistance Movement (NRM) that allegedly aims to intimidate and slander Ugandan asylum seekers in Canada. Dr. Kawuma refuted the allegations, emphasizing that a list circulating which labels NUP-affiliated Ugandans in Canada as asylum seekers is baseless and part of a broader attempt to undermine their credibility and advocacy efforts. He stressed that such actions violate privacy rights, spread misinformation, and potentially lead to discrimination and hostility against the individuals named.

Dr. Kawuma also reminded the public of the ongoing human rights abuses under Museveni’s regime in Uganda, which include indefinite detention, torture, and extrajudicial killings, arguing that these conditions justify the asylum claims. He urged the Ugandan government to prioritize development and democratic reforms over employing divisive tactics.

The NUP Diaspora Team Leader called for the international community’s support in holding the Museveni Junta accountable and emphasized the diaspora’s commitment to advocating for justice and human rights. He encouraged all Ugandans abroad to continue their advocacy, underscoring their right to protest and petition for changes in governance.
