In a powerful and emotional interview, transgender activist Anitah Namasole has revealed how international LGBTQ+ support network Rainbow Railroad saved her life after Uganda passed one of the world’s most severe anti-LGBTQ laws.
Speaking exclusively with journalist Male Deogratius, known as Tintah, on his YouTube channel Tintah Media, Anitah shared the harrowing reality of being a transgender woman in Uganda. She revealed that she was born a woman in a man’s body, and has faced constant fear, harassment, and the threat of imprisonment under Uganda’s sweeping anti-LGBTQ legislation.
“I had no choice but to leave. Staying meant risking torture or even death simply for being who I am,” Anitah said, her voice breaking with emotion. “Rainbow Railroad came to my rescue. They gave me hope and the chance to live freely without fear.”
Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Act, 2023
The Anti-Homosexuality Act, enacted in May 2023, is one of the harshest anti-LGBTQ laws in the world. It criminalizes same-sex sexual acts, with penalties including:

Life imprisonment for consensual same-sex relations.

Death penalty for “aggravated homosexuality,” which includes offenses such as same-sex acts involving minors, disabled individuals, or repeat offenders.

Up to 20 years in prison for promoting or supporting LGBTQ+ rights.

Mandatory reporting of suspected homosexual activities to authorities.
These provisions have created an environment of fear and repression for LGBTQ+ individuals in Uganda, leading many to flee the country in search of safety.
Rainbow Railroad’s Role in Anitah’s Escape
Rainbow Railroad is an international organization that helps LGBTQI+ people escape state-sponsored violence. Their mission is clear:
“We help LGBTQI+ people escape state-sponsored violence. In countries around the world, LGBTQI+ people face violence and oppression simply because of who they love or who they are. We help get them to safety.”
Anitah’s story is not unique. Rainbow Railroad has been instrumental in relocating vulnerable individuals from dangerous environments to safe havens. Their work continues to provide assistance to LGBTQ+ individuals worldwide, urging the international community to recognize the urgent need for protection and asylum for those persecuted because of their identity.
For Anitah, survival was possible only through global solidarity:
“Without Rainbow Railroad, I would not be alive today. They gave me my freedom back.”
Anitah’s testimony stands as both a cry for help and a beacon of hope for others still trapped under oppression. Journalist Tintah emphasized the importance of giving survivors a platform:
“These are real human beings whose lives are on the line. Their voices must be heard beyond Uganda’s borders.”
