The individuals featured in a viral video brandishing machetes have been identified as Sukura Onganyi and Derrick Kamira. The footage captured a tense encounter with a police patrol team led by Sgt Joshua Isabirye, moments after they attempted to evade arrest.

The incident transpired on a Tuesday night in Sempagala Zone, Ntinda, Nakawa Division, under Sgt Isabirye’s command. The patrol team attempted to stop three men riding a motorcycle (UFX 639Y), but the men fled, raising suspicion.

In their bid to escape, the suspects collided with the police patrol vehicle, causing them to fall. Despite their initial attempt to flee again, they were apprehended near the church of Pr Abed Bwanika, leading to the discovery of concealed machetes hidden in their waists.

Sgt Isabirye mentioned that while being searched, a bystander recorded a video, revealing the hidden machetes. The locals appeared shocked, some expressing their dismay by kicking the suspects, while the police intervened to maintain order.

Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, disclosed that Onganyi, a 19-year-old resident of Kamwokya, and Kamira, aged 23 and residing in Kiyembe Zone, Makindye, were provided medical attention at China Hospital Naguru, under police guard.

Following these developments, the police have initiated an investigation into the possession of these deadly weapons. They are currently in search of the third individual involved. Recovered evidence, including the machetes and the motorcycle, will be crucial in the impending trial.

The Kampala Metropolitan area has recently experienced incidents involving individuals wielding machetes, resulting in injuries and fatalities in areas such as Nsangi, Kyengera, Namungoona, Nansana, Bulenga, and Kira.
