Drake has fired back at Yasiin Bey’s recent criticism with the support of Method Man. In response to Bey’s characterization of Drake as a “pop” artist during a recent interview, the Canadian superstar took to his Instagram Stories on Monday (January 15).

Drake posted an old interview clip featuring Method Man, referencing Bey’s classic song “Umi Says” by writing, “What umi say again? Lemme shine my light king don’t change up now.”

In the video, Method Man, a member of the Wu-Tang Clan, provides his perspective on what Hip Hop means to him, emphasizing its role as a culture and way of life encompassing various elements like fashion, language, and artistic expression.

Yasiin Bey’s critique of Drake occurred in an interview with The Cutting Room Floor last week, where he described Drake’s music as “pop” and suitable for commercial settings like shopping. While acknowledging the likability of Drake’s music, Bey humorously associated it with a backdrop for commerce.

NLE Choppa also defended Drake against Yasiin Bey’s comments, expressing disbelief at the level of criticism and praising Drake’s diverse catalog. Choppa stated on social media, “They hate on this man so much it’s ridiculous. Dude catalog more than respectable. He like the [Kool-Aid] man different flavors for each day of the month. [Bey] don’t know what he talking about!”

This isn’t the first time Drake’s approach to music has faced criticism. Last year, Joe Budden criticized Drake’s “For All the Dogs” album, accusing him of rapping for a younger audience. Budden urged Drake to embrace a more mature and adult-oriented style. Interestingly, Drake had previously mentioned Yasiin Bey in his track “Away From Home,” highlighting the financial support he received from Bey for a performance.

As the exchange unfolds, fans await further responses and reactions within the hip-hop community, adding another layer to the ongoing conversations about artistic authenticity and musical evolution.
