During the press tour for “The Color Purple,” Taraji P. Henson has been drawing attention to the pay disparities faced by Black women in the entertainment industry. However, as the discussion gains momentum, producer Oprah Winfrey has faced criticism, with some blaming her for the alleged unfair compensation of the cast. Henson, in response, hopes the focus can return to the film itself, emphasizing the film’s themes of sisterhood and healing.

Speaking to Today.com about the rumors, Henson expressed her concern, stating, “Because right now, to me, it feels like what I said is now becoming louder than this beautiful film… And that’s not fair to me, or anybody in the film.” She stressed that “The Color Purple” is centered around characters living in an oppressed system and deals with issues of oppression for both men and women, with the exception of the white characters. The actress underscored the film’s core message of healing and sisterhood.

Additionally, Henson came to Oprah’s defense, highlighting the personal involvement of the renowned producer on set. “There are producers that don’t show up on set,” she noted. Henson recounted Oprah reaching out to her directly, not through intermediaries, ensuring that her needs were met. “She called me personally,” Henson shared. “Not my team, not my people — me, and asked me, ‘Taraji, if there’s anything you need, you let me know.’ And I said it with a shaking voice, I was like, ‘Well, yeah,’ — since she asked, and I told her and she fixed everything the next day.” As discussions continue, Henson hopes the film’s essence remains the focal point, urging a shift away from controversies.
