Motiv Kasagga, a blogger of National Unity Platform (NUP) party, has been released on cash bail of Shs1 million.

Kasagga on Tuesday, 11 October 2022, appeared before Buganda Road Court charged with five counts of alteration of computer materials to insult senior government officials, among them, Speaker of Parliament Anita Among.

Following his arrest last month, he was brought to court, charged and remanded. He denied the charges, and his lawyer Shamim Malende on Tuesday, 11 October 2022 presented his request for bail, which was granted.

The magistrate adjourned the case to November 11 for mention.

David Lewis Rubongoya, the NUP General Secretary, welcomed Kasagga’s release.

“After spending close to one month in detention following his abduction and torture, our comrade has been granted bail this morning. Very glad to note that he still as solid as rock! Grateful to the legal team for the great work,” he said.

NUP leaders have persistently accused government of abducting their supporters without any reason.
Last week, Bobi Wine said at a press conference in Kamwokya, Kampala yesterday that over 50 members of the NUP party have since been abducted and never been seen since the first person, John Bosco Kibalama was picked along Gayaza road in Wakiso District to date leaving 137 children under the party armpits for different kinds for provisions.

In the run-up to, during and after 2021 presidential and general elections, security agencies among them Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence operatives allegedly arrested hundreds of NUP supporters, leading to verbal exchanges in Parliament between the Opposition party and the government.

The government later admitted that law enforcement agencies had taken dozens of the NUP supporters, but downplayed the numbers raised by the Opposition party.

Mr Joel Ssenyonyi, the party’s spokesperson, said: “Many people have been abducted in drones kidnapped and taken to God knows where those who are lucky to eventually be brought to court show up bleeding with fresh wounds and beaten.”

He added that most times people think they are politicking when they mention abductions. Hearing from the victims’ family members he said shows they have been telling the truth.
