Cecilia Ogwal’s final public remarks, urging those reaching out from her hospital bed in India to first “finish your tears,” reflect the sharp, courageous, and witty personality that defined her as Uganda’s Iron Lady. Joseph Ochieno, vying for the presidency of the Uganda Peoples Congress (UPC), lauds her as a figure unparalleled on the continent, second only to Winnie Mandela.
The late Dokolo Woman lawmaker, set to be laid to rest in Kole District today, was praised during a recent parliamentary session for her unifying influence. Hanifa Kawooya, the Sembabule district woman representative, shared a personal anecdote of Ogwal praying for her after her return from medical treatment in India. Ogwal’s battle with cancer remained private, underscoring her intensely private nature.
Reflecting on their interactions, Kawooya recalled a robust conversation with Ogwal about whether to participate in the 1996 NRA election. Ogwal’s ability to bridge political divides, even while vehemently disagreeing on principles, earned her acclaim. In the House, she consistently supported minority reports without severing ties with the majority, showcasing her talent for consensus-building that kept her politically relevant and turned her political home into a harmonious space.
