In a significant development, the U.S. House of Representatives has approved a bill that could lead to the ban of TikTok in the country. The legislation mandates TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, to divest its controlling stake in the popular social media platform, citing concerns over national security. ByteDance, headquartered in China, has faced allegations of being influenced by the Chinese government, although the company has vehemently denied such claims.
While reactions to the potential ban vary, some prominent figures like Soulja Boy and Coi Leray appear unfazed. Leray emphasized that TikTok is not a primary platform for music streaming, while Soulja Boy made headlines with claims of significant earnings from the app.
However, amidst the controversy, TikTok’s CEO Shou Zi Chew expressed concerns about potential job losses and warned of a monopoly by other social media giants if the ban is enforced. China’s foreign ministry also criticized the move, labeling it as bullying behavior that disrupts normal business activities and international economic order.
President Joe Biden has indicated his readiness to sign the bill if approved by the Senate, although the sale of TikTok, valued at hundreds of billions of dollars, remains a challenging prospect. Stay tuned for further developments on this unfolding situation and reactions from key players like Soulja Boy and Coi Leray.
