Police Arrest 13 NUP Leaders in Jinja for Alleged Illegal Assembly

On Sunday, 13 supporters and leaders of the National Unity Platform (NUP) were arrested for allegedly holding an illegal assembly at the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) conference center in Jinja city. Ben Kabaka, the NUP coordinator for Iganga district, led the youth leaders who had gathered to discuss their organizational activities.

Two plainclothes police officers intervened, declaring the gathering illegal. Kabaka claimed that they had informed Kiira region police about the planned event and expressed his surprise at their actions. He insisted that it was unjustifiable for them to leave without a proper explanation from the police.

When the NUP leaders refused to vacate the premises, personnel from the Field Force Unit (FFU) arrived and used teargas to disperse them. Despite this, some youth leaders remained, prompting police to arrest them and take them to Jinja Central Police Station for prosecution.

Authorities also impounded two vehicles, a Mercedes Benz with registration number UAH 996F and a coaster with registration number UAZ 918B, which were towed to the Nalufenya police parking yard. Kiira regional police spokesperson James Mubi confirmed the arrests, stating that the suspects’ files were being processed for prosecution.
