Cancer is a formidable adversary, and for teenagers and young adults, the journey through diagnosis, treatment, and recovery can be particularly daunting. Recognizing the unique challenges faced by this demographic, the Charlie Mugga Teenage Cancer Initiative was established in March 2022. This humanitarian organization was founded by Charlie Mugga, who, having experienced the rigors of cancer treatment firsthand and now in remission, saw the pressing need to support teenagers and young adults grappling with cancer and its side effects.

The Scope of Teenage Cancer

Teenage cancer, though less common than adult cancer, presents distinct challenges. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cancer is one of the leading causes of death among teenagers and young adults worldwide. In Uganda, the burden of cancer is significant, with the Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI) reporting that approximately 60,000 new cancer cases are diagnosed each year, affecting people of all ages. Among these, a notable proportion involves teenagers and young adults, who face unique medical, psychological, and social challenges.

Charlie Mugga Teenage Cancer Initiative: Mission and Activities

The Charlie Mugga Teenage Cancer Initiative aims to bridge the gap in care and support for teenage cancer patients. The organization has undertaken several impactful activities since its inception:

  1. Donations to the Uganda Cancer Institute: Recognizing the critical role of the UCI in providing cancer care in Uganda, the initiative has made significant donations to support its operations. These donations have helped procure essential medical supplies and equipment, enhancing the institute’s capacity to deliver quality care.
  2. Effective Talking Therapies: Mental health support is crucial for cancer patients, who often experience anxiety, depression, and other psychological challenges. The initiative has introduced effective talking therapies, providing a safe space for teenagers to express their feelings and cope with the emotional toll of cancer.
  3. Support for Activities of Daily Living and Wellbeing: Beyond medical treatment, the initiative emphasizes the importance of overall wellbeing. It supports activities of daily living, including nutrition, physical exercise, and social engagement, helping patients maintain a sense of normalcy and quality of life during and after treatment.

April 9th, 2024: Needs Assessment at Jinja Regional Referral Hospital Nalufenya

On April 9th, 2024, Charlie and his dedicated team visited the Jinja Regional Referral Hospital Nalufenya to conduct a needs assessment. The findings were heart-wrenching, revealing significant gaps in resources and support for teenage cancer patients. The hospital struggles with inadequate medical supplies, limited access to specialized care, and insufficient psychosocial support for patients and their families.

The Cancer Run: A Call to Action

In response to the urgent needs identified during the assessment, the Charlie Mugga Teenage Cancer Initiative has organized a cancer run. This event aims to raise awareness and funds to support teenage cancer patients, both in the Jinja Regional Referral Hospital and the broader community. The funds raised will be directed towards procuring essential medical supplies, enhancing psychosocial support programs, and ensuring that teenage cancer patients have access to the basic necessities of life and care.

How to Support

The success of this initiative relies on the collective effort of individuals and organizations. You can support the cause by registering for the cancer run and making a donation.
