Outspoken Journalist Timothy Kalyegira Reportedly Abducted and Charged After Going Missing
Renowned journalist, political analyst, and media personality Timothy Kalyegira, who had recently been reported missing, was allegedly abducted and held incommunicado by security forces before being abruptly arraigned in court to face criminal charges.
The development has triggered widespread outrage across Uganda’s media landscape and political opposition, with critics labeling the arrest an overt assault on press freedom.
Targeted for Critical Analysis
Kalyegira, well-known for his incisive political commentary and appearances on platforms such as The Hard Questions show, has been highly vocal about the current administration. According to prominent opposition figures, his forced disappearance and subsequent legal targeting are a direct retaliation for his outspoken criticism of President Yoweri Museveni and his son, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
Leading opposition figures have condemned the state’s tactics, framing Kalyegira’s detention as part of an escalating campaign to silence dissenting voices ahead of upcoming political cycles.
In a powerful statement addressing the situation, a leading opposition leader warned that the public’s past complacency has enabled the state to act with impunity:
“We got to this point because everyone thought that someone else would fix it. Hopefully everyone now realises the collective danger and the collective duty. Only then shall we be free.”
Human rights advocates and media freedom watchdogs are calling for the immediate drop of all charges against Kalyegira, urging the international community to scrutinize Uganda’s worsening environment for independent journalism and free speech.
