Activists Appeal to Turkish President Erdogan Against Extradition of Blogger Fred Lumbuye
A group of Ugandan political activists has issued an urgent public appeal to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, urging the Ankara administration to resist pressure from the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) and its leader, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, to deport exiled blogger Fred Lumbuye.
The appeal comes in response to recent demonstrations staged by PLU supporters outside the Turkish Embassy in Kampala, where demonstrators demanded Lumbuye’s immediate extradition to Uganda to face criminal charges related to state security and his online broadcasts.
In a widely circulated video statement, the activists pleaded directly with Turkish authorities to reject the extradition demands, warning that returning the vocal critic to Kampala would put his life in immediate danger. They argued that if Lumbuye were handed over to Ugandan authorities, he would face severe torture and potential execution at the hands of security forces.
Fred Lumbuye Kajubi, known online as “Chemical Ali,” has remained a prominent critic of President Yoweri Museveni’s administration while operating from Turkey. Tensions over his status have escalated as Ugandan military figures and PLU leadership intensify calls for Turkish authorities to apprehend and repatriate him.
Human rights advocates and opposition supporters continue to call on international diplomatic bodies and the Turkish government to grant Lumbuye political protection, emphasizing the grave human rights risks associated with his forced return.
