The General Court Martial at Makindye has remanded the National Unity Platform (NUP) head of security, Achileo Kivumbi, to Luzira upper prison until September 2, 2024, when his case will be heard again.

Achileo, 42, is accused of being in possession of military attire. He was arraigned in court on Monday before a panel chaired by Brigadier Robert Mugabe.

According to prosecution, Kivumbi was in possession of a pair of pips, reserved for UPDF Lieutenant Colonel, at his residence in Nansana East 2B Zone in Nansana Municipality, Wakiso District.

“Kivumbi Achileo on the 3rd day of August 2024 at around 1503 hours while at Nansana East II B zone, Nansana Municipality in Wakiso district was found in unlawful possession of 01 pair of Lt. Col. pips, the said pops being gazetted defense stores,” the charge sheet reads.

Kivumbi pleaded not guilty to the offense. Prosecution will avail evidence against him when the case is heard again on September 2, 2024.

According to NUP secretary general Lewis Rubongoya, their head of security was ‘badly tortured’ during interrogation and was being forced to admit that he was one of the organizers of the march to parliament protests.

“He was badly tortured and forced to spend the night on very tight handcuffs, as they interrogated him on Bobi Wine’s plans and the usual things. He says they were pushing him into confessing that he was one of the organizers of protests. When he refused to do this, that’s how they resorted to the’military pips’ story,” writes Rubongoya in a social media post.
