KAMPALA — Serious concern is mounting within the opposition ranks following the emergency transfer of Kampala Lord Mayor and opposition strongman Erias Lukwago from prison custody to Mulago National Referral Hospital for specialized medical evaluation.

The veteran politician’s deteriorating health has sparked intense public anxiety and renewed intense debates surrounding the healthcare standards provided to detainees in Uganda.

Medical Team Steps In Amid Concerns

Lukwago’s legal counsel, Medard Lubega Sseggona, confirmed that specialists at Mulago Hospital have finally been able to access and examine the detained mayor after persistent complaints of illness while in custody.

“We have been deeply concerned about his deteriorating health, and we are hopeful that the specialists will establish the exact cause of his illness so that he can receive appropriate treatment,” Sseggona stated.

While the exact diagnosis remains confidential, family sources noted that Lukwago has a history of intermittent health complications, amplifying the urgency of the current intervention. His wife, Zalwango Lukwago, expressed gratitude to the supporters standing in solidarity and urged the public to keep the family in prayer during this stressful period.

Uganda Prisons Defends Treatment Protocol

Addressing the growing speculation that authorities had neglected Lukwago’s condition, Uganda Prisons Service spokesperson Frank Baine clarified that the transfer was part of standard procedural protocol.

  • Prison Policy: Baine emphasized that when an inmate requires advanced care beyond what prison medical units can provide, they are routinely referred to premier public facilities.

  • Patient Privacy: The Prisons Service declined to release specific details of his clinical assessment, citing strict patient-doctor confidentiality rules.

Political & Legal Backlash

The news has sent shockwaves through the political landscape. Allied opposition leaders gathered outside the court and Mulago Hospital, demanding complete transparency regarding his state.

Legal advocates have pointed out that under Ugandan law, imprisonment does not strip an individual of their constitutional right to adequate and timely healthcare. Human rights groups are closely monitoring the timeline of Lukwago’s treatment to determine if there were any unlawful delays by state authorities in granting him specialized medical access.

The public now anxiously awaits the official medical report from Mulago’s specialists to determine the next steps for his treatment and legal proceedings.
