Authorities in Jinja have initiated an investigation following the sudden death of a senior four student identified as Joshua Lukonda, aged 17, at Kiira College Butiki. The tragic incident occurred on Monday evening around 7:30 pm.

According to Mr. James Mubi, the spokesperson for the Kiira region police, it is reported that Lukonda experienced severe headaches on Sunday, March 24, 2024. He sought medical assistance at the school dispensary, where he was administered Panadol. However, he returned to his dormitory and later collapsed from his bed.

Mubi further elaborated that upon receiving the distress call, the school promptly arranged for an ambulance to transport the student to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital. En route to Jinja Main Hospital, Lukonda was provided with oxygen as his heartbeat registered a high rate of 105 beats per minute (BPM).

As investigations continue, police authorities are yet to release a postmortem report. Lukonda’s body remains at the mortuary of the medical facility.

In response to this tragic incident, authorities have issued a caution to all schools in Jinja, emphasizing the importance of having a standby medical team, including laboratory technicians. Schools are urged to promptly report both minor and serious health concerns to parents and facilitate referrals when necessary, rather than waiting for critical situations to arise.

The untimely demise of Joshua Lukonda has sparked concerns about the healthcare protocols and emergency response systems in schools. Authorities are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of students, and measures will be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
