Kirk Franklin has broken his silence following his mention by Katt Williams in the viral Club Shay Shay interview last month. Speaking to HipHopDX at the Grammys, Franklin shared his thoughts on being referenced by Williams, offering a gracious response to the comedian’s comments.

Reflecting on Williams’ mention of him, Franklin expressed a sense of resignation mixed with tolerance. “You just shake your head. It’s like, ‘Lord, have mercy!’ because I don’t know where it’s going,” he remarked. Despite the unexpected attention, Franklin emphasized the importance of providing individuals with platforms to share their truths and experiences. “I think that every human being has the right to tell their voice and their story,” he added.

Unlike some other individuals mentioned by Williams in the interview, Franklin seemed to have emerged relatively unscathed from the comedian’s remarks. Williams’ interview style often involves sharp critique and satire, prompting various responses from those mentioned. While some, like Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish, offered contrasting reactions, Ludacris chose to respond with a freestyle diss track aimed at Williams.

The impact of Williams’ interview extended beyond individual responses, as evidenced by a skit on Saturday Night Live. During the January 21 episode, SNL parodied the interview, with Ego Nwodim portraying Williams and Devin Walker portraying Shannon Sharpe. The skit humorously exaggerated Williams’ persona and comments, poking fun at his remarks about Kevin Hart and even his claim of inventing fruit.

In addition to the SNL spoof, the episode featured musical performances by Renee Rapp, who was joined by Megan Thee Stallion for their collaboration “Not My Fault.” The song was recorded for the newly released Mean Girls remake, which blends elements from the original film and the Broadway musical adaptation. Rapp also performed her solo track “Snow Angel” from her album of the same name, released last year.
