NUP Coordinator Bright Muhumuza Returns After Alleged Abduction, Detention at Mbuya Military Barracks

The National Unity Platform (NUP) coordinator for the Ankole sub-region, Bright Muhumuza, was dropped off at his home in Kakoba Central Cell, Kakoba Ward, around 1 a.m. today, days after being reportedly abducted by armed men. Muhumuza’s sudden return comes after he was allegedly taken from Calabash Restaurant along the Mbarara-Masaka Road on Tuesday.
According to Muhumuza, he was blindfolded, forced into a drone vehicle, and transported to Mbuya Military Barracks in Kampala. He claims he was held by the Joint Anti-Terrorism Taskforce (JATT) during his detention. The circumstances surrounding his abduction and subsequent release remain unclear, with no official statement yet from authorities regarding the allegations.
Muhumuza’s disappearance had sparked concern among NUP members and human rights activists, who condemned the alleged abduction and called for his immediate release. His return home has raised more questions than answers, as details about who abducted him, why he was taken, and why he was released remain shrouded in mystery.
NUP officials have demanded a thorough investigation into the incident, urging the government to address what they describe as a growing pattern of intimidation and harassment against opposition members. “This is not an isolated incident. It is part of a broader strategy to silence dissent and undermine democracy,” said a senior NUP member.
Human rights organizations have also weighed in, calling for accountability and transparency. “The alleged abduction and detention of Bright Muhumuza without due process is a violation of his fundamental rights. The government must provide clarity and ensure such incidents do not recur,” said a spokesperson for a local rights group.
As of now, Muhumuza is reportedly recovering from the ordeal, while his family and supporters express relief at his safe return. However, the lack of official communication from security agencies continues to fuel speculation and concern among the public.
This incident comes amid heightened political tensions in Uganda, with opposition groups accusing the government of using state machinery to target critics ahead of the 2026 general elections. Calls for electoral reforms and respect for human rights are growing louder, with many urging the government to address these issues to ensure a free and fair political environment.
For now, the focus remains on Muhumuza’s well-being and the unanswered questions surrounding his alleged abduction. As the story develops, many are watching closely to see how the government and security agencies will respond.
