UJA Denounces Security Forces’ Brutal Attack on Top TV Journalist Miracle Ibra
The Uganda Journalists Association (UJA) has expressed deep concern over the violent assault of Miracle Ibra, a journalist from Top TV, who was severely injured in an attack by security personnel this afternoon. Ibra was targeted while performing his duties, covering a political event in Kawempe, where he was reporting on the blocked meeting of Erias Luyimbazi Nalukoola, the National Unity Platform (NUP) flagbearer for Kawempe North.
The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon when Ibra, who was wearing his media house-branded jacket, was hit by an explosive device, a shocking act of aggression by security forces who are supposed to protect journalists and uphold their safety while on duty.
In a statement, the UJA strongly condemned the attack, calling it an unacceptable violation of press freedom and a blatant act of impunity. The association emphasized that such actions undermine the safety of journalists who are performing their professional roles in the public interest.
“The Ugandan media plays a vital role in upholding democracy and transparency, and attacks on journalists are an attack on the very foundation of free speech. We demand accountability from the authorities responsible for this brutal act,” said the UJA.
The association further assured the public that it is currently conducting an assessment of the situation and will announce further actions in response to the attack. “Journalism is not a crime,” UJA reiterated, stressing that the rights and safety of journalists must be respected at all times.
As of now, Miracle Ibra’s condition remains a concern, and the UJA is monitoring the situation closely, ensuring that justice is sought for the victim and that such incidents do not repeat in the future.
